What’s new in Alpine Linux 3.6.0?

  • Support for 64-bit little-endian POWER machines (ppc64le)
  • Support for 64-bit IBM z Systems (s390x)
  • Rust 1.17.0 and Cargo 0.18.0
  • GHC 8.0.2
  • Julia 0.5.2
  • GCC 6.3
  • LLVM 4.0
  • PHP 7.1
  • Go 1.8
  • Python 3.6
  • LuaJIT 2.1beta3
  • nginx 1.12
  • Ruby 2.4*

Emphasis mine. I need to play with this more. I gave up last time, but I think that's just due to my inexperience with nginx configuration. It's SO ideal for a web server, it's not even funny. And it's crazy fast; makes Ubuntu Server look like a 386DX

Huh, I hadn't thought about using it for production. It is what I run in GitLab CI as a base image.

Also, update for 3.6.*:

The main hurdle is Digital Ocean and Linode don't have Alpine Linux as a distro you can select when making a new server.

There is this voting page where you can vote to recommend they add Alpine as a distro, but I'm not certain how much DO looks at that.

I think Linode allows custom distros, but it is obviously not very easy.

@tim, have you see "bare metal" hosting providers, like Packet? I sometimes wonder if I should grow into something like that, or just start colo'ing my own servers... hardware falures, argh!
