Proprietary Eponym

Proprietary eponym? I was familiar with the phenomina but did not realize it had a word. So you caused me to have to look it up.

me too! haha it worked!

One of my favorite things about learning Japanese were learning the history of certain loan words, many of which are proprietary eponyms, such as office stapler being called ホチキス (hochikisu), taking the name of the company that made staplers.

My favorite example of this is something ive read a few places but I dont know if its actually true.

Much the same way that some groups of people call all videogame consoles nintendos supposedly at one time in Russia the Dendy taiwanese bootleg NES became the proprietary eponym for consoles there.
