Have you seen Telehack? It’s a “hacking game”/simulation of the net around this era. Reconstructs hosts and userlists from uucp maps and litters Textfiles dot com material all around on the hosts. IIRC it doesn’t do much to explain itself along the way but there are helpful resources out there.
This could be like my new favorite thing ever if I let it. I had no idea this existed!!!

It’s dope and a very clever way of using real data for world-building. I showed a who/finger listing off one of the umd.edu boxes to one of my advisors at maryland a long time back and he went down the list like “oh wow I know him, she’s two doors down, that guy’s dead” etc
