I love the idea of bbPress, because it layers on top of WordPress, but I am pretty sure Discourse ate its lunch a couple years ago. It would be neat to see bbPress approach feature parity with Discourse, but I don’t see it as being likely.
Since running forums is an investment in a (potential) community, it is probably better to roll with Discourse from the beginning, and use the WP Discourse plugin. It has a great integration feature set, and then you get the best of both worlds.
