Your software should tell me what it is. How meta is that?

I have been reading up on metadata lately, specifically RDFa. I am still wrapping my head around it. It is difficult for me to articulate why this is important, so I am reading what others have said. My goal is a semantic tribe.

What I want to talk about right now is how frustrating it is when web software doesn’t leave an indicator of what it is. When I see a site that is made well the first thing I do is look at the source. Sometimes I get what I want (both WordPress and DokuWiki use the meta element with the name attribute and generate value to give the software and version). Often there is nothing to tell me how the code is being generated.

I am sure that templating contributes in large part to this. For now I have added this to my template checklist, but I am going to look into this a bit more. I am on a quest for a simple to implement semantic markup that will be human, computer, and maiki-readable.
